I remember the first time I came to Lipgloss. It was sometime in 2004, after a suggestion by Rockstar Aaron, who said I would enjoy it. So, I overcame my shyness and came by myself one night after work.

There was something about the energy of that place that immediately captured me. The atmosphere – somewhat hipster-ish, yet friendly, unpretentious and non-judgemental; the music was mostly up my alley – indie, electro and brit-pop; and the drinks were relatively cheap. I had a blast, dancing my ass off in a crowd of people, and I didn’t give a damn about anything in the world. It was just me and the music and the motion of bodies around me. I was in the moment.

So, I’ve been going to Lipgloss on and off since then, sometimes bringing friends along, other times by myself. Until, one day in 2007, resident DJ Tyler “Danger” Jacobson happened to see the photos I’ve taken for Rockstar Aaron’s Birthday Bash at the Rockbar and asked me if I was interested in getting a gig as the Lipgloss photographer. I gladly accepted, and thus, through an unexpected opportunity, I got into freelance nightlife photography. Never in a million years would I have thought that I would still be doing this, now a 3rd year in a row and with half a dozen different venues under my belt.

As I mentioned before, I love it. It gives me a chance to get out of my shell and interact with more people in one night than I normally do in weeks. I enjoy taking photos of attractive people having a good time, who come to Lipgloss week after week. I love the music, and I love the atmosphere. It’s a place that truly welcomes everyone, and a place where nobody gives a damn if you can’t dance or if you’re awkward, because many of the people who come here are just like you. They like to unwind, have a few drinks, and dance their asses off to some good music.

Now in its 8th year, Lipgloss is still going strong. It has changed and evolved since its early days, but it is still an awesome dance party and a great alternative to tasteless hip-hop and repetitive techno-pumping clubs of LoDo. About a quarter of my music collection now consists of bands and artists I found out about through Lipgloss, and that’s saying a lot :)
