A quick VELFILM Update and Local Business Video: Checkmate Moving and Storage

It has been a busy couple of weeks here at VELFILM Productions! Juggling between several local business and corporate video projects, shooting a wedding, a Bar Mitzvah, working with another local video production company and spending time with family visiting from out of town, things have been in constant motion. There seems to be a sudden influx of projects piling up this time of the year, which is a nice change of pace from the relatively slow summer season. Despite this somewhat hectic “everything is happening at once” period, I’m definitely glad to be staying busy.

Just a little over a year has passed since I left my full-time job and dived into the freelance videography business. Even though I have been shooting and editing videos on the side, on and off, for over a decade (it’s mind-boggling that it’s been that long, now that I think about it), the transition to making a living solely through freelance video production has been eye-opening. In the past year, I have learned and experienced so much, and I’m still in constant process of learning and discovering new things that I didn’t know about; knowledge that can only be acquired through practice and experience. It has been a year of making mistakes and discovering how to work for myself, with a fair share of ups and downs that comes from such a process. The more I’m learning, the more I realize how much I still need to learn. It’s a never-ending process of constant self-improvement, and I wouldn’t want to have it any other way! So far, it’s been a pretty incredible journey and I’m still assured that I made the right decision when I decided to leave the worker bee environment otherwise known as a “full-time job” and give myself a chance of doing something I actually enjoy for a living, even if at a cost and not without some sacrifices.

Below is a promotional video for Checkmate Moving and Storage, a full-service residential, commercial, and industrial moving company serving the Denver Metro Area, which I shot last month for KDVR FOX 31 local business directory.

A sneak peak into the future of VELFILM

A sculpture by Gonzalo Lebrija created for the Biennial of the Americas in Denver. I admit that it has very little to do with this blog post, but it’s pretty bad-ass, don’t you think?

As I mentioned before, I am in the process of transitioning VELFILM into a full-time media production business, which is tentatively scheduled to launch in late August – early September. Even though I haven’t been able to update this blog as frequently as I would like, there is a lot of work going on behind the scenes at VELFILM. You could say, I’m lining up my ducks :)

Many of my friends and colleagues have asked me what I will do after I quit my day job (which is set to happen in less than two weeks). My plan is to take some much-needed time off to relax, recharge, clear my mind and renew my energy. Perhaps, I will do a little bit of local travel. It would be nice to enjoy the rest of the summer without being subjected to any important responsibilities or obligations.

Then, in September, I plan on diving into freelancing full-on.

The primary focus of VELFILM will be affordable video production for small businesses, non-profit organizations and educational institutions in the Denver Metro Area. I have already done a number of such projects on the side and I would like to expand this aspect of my business.

In addition, I will be offering photography and videography services to local artists, musicians, fashion designers and other creative personalities, as well as to clubs and organizations that deal with the arts, culture and entertainment. Nightlife events, concerts, film festivals, sci-fi and entertainment conventions, performances, fashion shows, art exhibits and so on. Having a strong appreciation for art and entertainment, it is my passion and desire to support and showcase the local creative community.

Finally, depending on availability, I will shoot weddings, parties and other private events.

In the coming months, I plan on revamping this website with an updated portfolio and demo reel, as well as creating branding across all social media networks that is more consistent and, hopefully, a little bit more polished.

So, stay tuned – exciting times are ahead! Feel free to leave comments or suggestions, and please – spread the word to anyone who may be looking for affordable video production or photography services in the Denver area in the near future :)

Looking to the future

Summer in Denver is an exciting season filled with abundance of music festivals, arts performances, nightlife events and outdoor activities. Trying to keep up with covering some of those events on top of working full-time has been challenging, to say the least. I haven’t been able to update this blog and the rest of the VELFILM website in a timely manner, and I apologize for that. But, there is some good news.

In the near future, I’m planning to transition into freelance video production and photography full-time. This is something I have been working on very hard for the past year and I’m excited to give it a shot (actually, not just a shot - give it everything I’ve got). Shortage of free time to work on creative projects and network has been one of the biggest things holding me back, and feel that now is the time to initiate change and start pursuing what I feel is the right path for me to take.

It will be challenging, and there is much work ahead (even now, it feels like I’m working 2 jobs), but I’m confident that with persistence and a little bit of luck, I will be able to succeed. Of course, I will also need all the support I can get :)

There are many updates I’m planning to implement into the VELFILM brand, business strategy and online presence, but things aren’t going as fast as I would like (once again – lack of free time). This will hopefully change in the coming months. Stay tuned, because there is much exciting stuff on the horizon, and I can’t wait to share it with all of you!

Meanwhile, keep reading this blog, check out my Denver Nightlife Photography column on Examiner.com and spread the word to anyone who may need affordable video production or photography services in the Denver area, starting this fall.
