Who’s Bad (the ultimate Michael Jackson tribute band) and more at the Electric Avenue Music and Arts Festival (9.4.10)

One of the perks of shooting for Examiner.com is the occasional hook up with press passes to cool events, which I otherwise may not have been able to attend. One of such events took place this Labor Day weekend at the historic Five Points neighborhood. It was called Electric Avenue Music and Arts Festival, and apparently it was the best-kept secret in Denver (many people seemed to opt for the more mainstream Taste of Colorado).

One of the highlights of the 2-day music festival was a performance by Who’s Bad, the Ultimate Michael Jackson Tribute Band. These guys put on a great show, definitely channeling the King of Pop’s energy and enthusiasm. The crowd was ecstatic.

Below are some of the photos from Who’s Bad’s performance on Saturday. For more photos from the concert and other images from Electric Avenue festival, check out my set on Flickr.

ARTCRANK Bicycle-Themed Poster Art Showcase Opening

Read the article and view the slideshow on Examiner.com

There is a number of cool events taking place in Denver this Labor Day weekend. One of them is ARTCRANK, a bicycle-themed poster art showcase, which opened at the Lisa Kowalski gallery on Saturday. Local art, music, food, bikes and, of couse – PBR. Any event that contains those elements will definitely have my full appreciation. How about you?

ARTCRANK also served as kind of a pre-kickoff party for the Bicycle Film Festival, which will take place next weekend in Denver. Sadly, I will not be able to attend it due to some previously-made plans, but it is sure to be a blast. Perhaps, next year.

Check out the slideshow below for some of the photos from Denver’s ARTCRANK opening. Remember, you can always maximize the slideshow and view it full-screen, if you prefer, or go directly to Flickr to view individual photos.

The Official Vampire Weekend After-Party with Jonathan and BPro Live at Lipgloss (9/3/10)

Another fun-filled night of dancing, music and cheap drinks at Lipgloss. One of these days, I’ll have to get myself a nice ultra-wide angle lens. 17mm just doesn’t seem wide enough for some club shots anymore.

The Last Days of Summer – a photo shoot with Elizabeth

Last weekend, I finally got a chance to escape city life for one day. I met up with my friend Elizabeth, an aspiring actress, singer, model and a student of kung-fu (although, she’s modest and probably wouldn’t tell you these things). Together, we drove to a beautiful mountain area near Evergreen, CO for a practice photo-shoot.

As I’m still learning about photography, especially portraits, I wanted to experiment with some strobist (off-camera flash) techniques. I brought a pretty bare-bones setup with me – my trusty workhorse Sigma 500DG Super, a cheap Yongnuo YN460, a light stand and a white shoot-through umbrella, which I ended up not using. I used Yongnuo RF602 wireless triggers to sync the two flashes. Most of the time, I shot with only one strobe, and for some shots I used the second flash for backlighting. Of course, the sun also acted as a pretty substantial light source in itself, when it wasn’t hiding behind clouds.

I set all of my camera settings manually, so it took some trial and error to get the exposures right. Overall, I’m pretty happy with some of the results I got. I particularly like the more dramatic shots with a darker background and I think some of the cave shots came out quite well. Ideally, I would have liked to have a reflector to smooth out some of the shadows; perhaps, next time.

Elizabeth, being a good sport that she is, was very patient and willing to experiment with various poses and set-ups. We weren’t going for anything specific – I just wanted to play with lighting and Elizabeth wanted some fun photos. Clearly, I still have much to learn and I’m excited to start doing more of such shoots to sharpen my skills.
